An investigation into the ban on Downing Street parties is expected to reveal no criminal charges that need further investigation by the police, according to a Times article.
Sue Gray, the second permanent secretary of state to whom Boris Johnson has commissioned the investigation, is also expected to rule out whether the prime minister violated the code of conduct by attending some of the rallies under investigation. which would be a reason for resignation. Ms Gray is expected to say that such a crisis is beyond her remit.
According to the Times, the experienced senior public administration official may criticize the Prime Minister for a wrong judgment when he attended the party on May 20, 2020, which he said he considered to be a working meeting.
He is also expected to criticize the blurred boundaries between work and social gatherings on Downing Street, which houses both the prime minister’s office and official residence.
He is said to have sought advice from a top lawyer on whether prohibition rules were violated and from government lawyers on labor law issues.
The outcome of the investigation is probably expected next week. It is believed that several Conservative MPs are waiting to see its contents as well as the reactions of the citizens of their constituencies before deciding whether to express distrust in the person of Boris Johnson in letters to the competent party body.
The Metropolitan Police also said they would not investigate the parties unless Gray’s report indicated such a need.
Ms Gray is investigating a total of at least eight banned parties on Downing Street and other government buildings, including both of April 16, 2021, which were revealed by the Telegraph on Friday.
The parties took place on the eve of the funeral of Prince Philip. A Downing Street spokesman said at noon that he regretted the party and that national mourning had been declared for the Duke of Edinburgh’s death, adding that the government had apologized to the Queen.
