Moscow and its suburbs were targeted in the early hours of today of a rare drone attack that caused “minor” material damage to buildings in the Russian capitalwith no casualties, with the Russian Ministry of Defense accusing Ukraine of a “terrorist attack”.

“This morning the Kiev regime launched a terrorist attack with drones against targets in the city of Moscow,” the Defense Ministry said, clarifying that eight drones were intercepted either by electronic means or “with the Pantsir-S anti-aircraft system.”

However, Baza, a Telegram account linked to security services, said 25 drones were involved in the attack. The RBC news website cited a source as saying “more than ten” drones were shot down by air defense systems.

In addition, the Russian Investigative Committee announced that it has launched an investigation into the incident, pointing out that several drones crashed into buildings in Moscow.

“This morning, at dawn, an attack by drones caused minor material damage to buildings. All the city’s emergency response services are on the scene (…) No one has been seriously injured, according to the information so far,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram a little earlier.

He clarified that two people sought medical help, but none of them were seriously injured.

For his part, the governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, pointed out that several drones were shot down near the capital.

“This morning residents of some areas in the Moscow region could hear the sound of explosions, it was our air defense system,” he also noted on Telegram.

“Several drones were shot down as they approached Moscow,” Vorobiov explained, calling on residents to “keep calm” and assuring them that “all rescue services are doing their job.”

Moscow and its suburbs, more than 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine, have rarely been targeted by drone strikes since the start of the war. In early May two drones were shot down over the Kremlin, an attack attributed to Kiev.

Images shared on social media showed smoke rising into the sky. Others show a broken window in an apartment building.

According to Sobyanin, the authorities proceeded to evacuate two apartment buildings in Moscow, which were damaged by the attack. Their tenants “will be able to return to their apartments as soon as the special services have completed their work,” the mayor of Moscow clarified.
