At least 16 people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus collided with a tanker near Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The fatal accident occurred in the morning on the highway connecting Accra to Cape Coast. The bus entered the oncoming traffic, causing it to collide with a fuel tanker.

Firefighters freed injured passengers from the wreckage of the bus and retrieved 16 bodies. Some of the injured are in critical condition and authorities fear the death toll could rise.

National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) chief Robert Hackman told reporters that the bus driver admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.
