The Cypriot and the Greek-Turkish relations are included in the Eastern Mediterranean issues in which the Berlin wants to see “positive developments” in the near future, government spokesman Stephen Hembestright said in response to a related question.

“The Cypriot issue is an issue – last week the Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulidis was here and it was one of the issues discussed. There are certainly many bilateral issues between Greece and Turkey, which we repeatedly try to advance constructively,” said Mr. Hebstreit and, referring to the telephone conversation that Chancellor Soltz and the re-elected President of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan had on Monday, he added: “Turkey is an important regional power, with influence in various conflicts that exist in the region, and using that influence positively and constructively is something we very much want to encourage Turkey to do. In this context there is a range of issues, which in a short phone call like this one on Monday – President Erdogan had to answer a series of congratulatory calls – were simply outlined, without going into depth.”
