THE French President Emmanuel Macron will receive the governor on Sunday Raoni Metukriteone of the indigenous Amazonian leadersin order to “reiterate his commitment to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples”, the Élysée announced today.

“The president of the Republic will meet with philarch Raoni this Sunday, June 4, at the Elysee Palace, on the occasion of the latter’s visit to Paris,” the presidency writes in a statement.

“Filarch Raoni was received by the head of state at the Elysée in May 2019 and was also invited to the summit of the Group of Seven (G7) in Biarritz under the French presidency in August of the same year,” recalls the same source.

“Sunday’s meeting will be an opportunity for the president of the Republic to reiterate his commitment to respecting the human rights of indigenous peoples and his determination to work for the protection of natural reserves and especially tropical forests that are vital stores of carbon and treasures of biodiversity”, adds Elysée.

“The discussion will focus on upcoming important dates to strengthen forest protection on a global scale,” such as the accompanying summit for a new global economic agreement on June 22 and 23 in Paris, and then the Amazon Summit this summer.

Almost 382 square kilometers were destroyed in the Amazon in April, according to official figures released in April, a drastic 68% drop from the 1,026 km2 deforested in April 2022, the last year of Lula’s predecessor, the far-right Zach Bolsonaro.
