A 1708 violin created by one of history’s greatest string makers, Antonio Stradivari, is being auctioned June 8 in New York by Tarisio Fine Instruments and Bows. The violin in question was once owned by Empress Catherine the Great of Russia and is referred to as ‘Empress Caterina’.
Although the house did not provide an estimate for the amount, it has in the past achieved great success in sales of the legendary manufacturer’s instruments.

This particular violin is said to be the second best preserved Stradivarius violin while the best preserved, the ‘Messiah’, is in the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford. Last year, Tarisio sold the second most expensive Stradivarius, the ‘Da Vinci, ex-Seidel’ for $15.3 million.
“Empress Caterina” comes from Antonio Stradivari’s so-called “Golden Age”, which lasted from 1700 to 1720.
