The Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii exploded today at 04:44 (local time, 17:44 Greek time), announced the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Lava erupts from the Kilauea crater, which is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

The US Geological Survey (USGS0) raised the alert level from “orange” to “red” until it assesses the volcanic activity. “For now, the activity is limited to the crater, the risks will be reassessed as the phenomenon develops,” it says.

Kilauea volcano last erupted in January, with activity continuing into March.

In 2019, intense seismic activity and a powerful eruption of Kilauea destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses.
