Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today praised the “heroism” of his army as heavy fighting rages in the country’s south, hinting at Kiev’s long-announced counter-offensive.

“To our soldiers, to all those who entered into particularly tough battles these days. We are witnesses of your heroism and are grateful for every minute of your lives,” Zelensky said tonight in his daily message.

Kiev said its forces were ready for a counterattack to retake territory in the east and south, but clarified that no official announcement should be expected.

Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive that had “begun” had failed.

Tonight, President Zelensky did not mention a possible counterattack or a special military operation

“We are focusing our attention on all the places where our action is required and where the enemy can be defeated,” he said.
