Three people have died as heavy rains hit eastern and central Cuba, causing extensive property damage and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes, authorities said Monday.
The rains started on Thursday and eased yesterday, but rescue operations continued in several eastern provinces (HolguÃn, Camaguey, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Las Tunas) as well as in the central province of Sandy Spirits.
The Civil Protection of Camaway reported yesterday that a 56-year-old man was found dead in a dam, adding that an investigation is underway into the death of a second, 67-year-old.
In Granma, nearly 7,500 had to leave their homes, while in the province of Las Tunas, some 7,000 hectares of crops were destroyed. On Friday, authorities announced the death by drowning of a 60-year-old man.
“No one will be forgotten,” promised the day before Sunday, the president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, adding that his country will recover from the disaster.
