The Clooney Foundation for Justice is accusing Venezuelan security forces of crimes against humanity in their treatment of dissidents since 2014, in a lawsuit filed today in Argentina.
The Foundation says that due to a lack of response from Venezuelan authorities, it filed the lawsuit in Argentina, a country that has international jurisdiction and can therefore investigate and prosecute war crimes and torture wherever they are committed.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of two families who say they were victimized by security forces in different parts of Venezuela, where Nicolas Maduro has ruled since 2013. The Venezuelan government did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the development.
“We’re talking about arbitrary detention, torture, extrajudicial executions,” said Ignacio Hovtis, a lawyer representing the Clooney Foundation. He noted that for legal and security reasons he prefers not to disclose the details of the lawsuit.

“These are not isolated cases. The cases we represent are indicative of those we have been documenting for years,” Hovtis added.
The International Criminal Court in The Hague is investigating alleged human rights violations in Venezuela. An independent United Nations panel has accused the Maduro government of crimes against humanity.
Argentina’s judiciary has previously agreed to investigate crimes against humanity in Spain and Myanmar, prompting the Clooney Foundation to file the suit in Buenos Aires. “Argentina is one of the few countries in the world that applies international jurisdiction. We think we have a very strong case,” Hovtis said.
