Russian forces repelled eight Ukrainian army attacks on various settlements east and northeast of the city of Donetsk, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed in its daily report on Sunday, although the information could not be confirmed by independent sources, CNN reported.

Ukraine’s counteroffensive is underway with troops engaged in heavy fighting along the southern and eastern front lines, the Ukrainian military said on Saturday.

Early on Sunday, the Ukrainian Air Force said it had hit a Russian ammunition depot in Kherson, a claim confirmed by the command of the Russian-backed southern region.

Ukrainian forces hit the ammunition depot in the village of Rikove, which is just inland from the Sea of Azov in Kherson, the Ukrainian military spokesman said. The ammunition depot was “important,” Serhii Brachuk, a spokesman for the Odessa military administration, said in a Telegram post on Sunday.

The Russian-backed Kherson command in the region confirmed the Ukrainian shelling while reporting that two missiles, which could be Storm Shadow cruise missiles, had hit the city, one of which was intercepted by air defenses. Seven strikes from multiple rocket launchers also targeted an area further west in the region, near the village of Lazourne, according to Russian-backed officials. Five of those missiles were intercepted, they said.

The Ukrainian military on Sunday claimed to have hit several targets in the past 24 hours. “Over the past day, rocket and artillery units hit three command posts, two manpower concentration areas, five ammunition depots and three artillery units in firing positions,” the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

In the latest development, Ukraine has recaptured a village near the front line in the southern Zaporizhia region, the head of the Russian administration there said on Sunday. Ukrainian forces claimed the village of Pyatikhatki – located south of the city of Zaporizhia, just east of the Dnipro River – according to Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Russian-backed government body in the occupied region.
