Its Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled today “unconstitutional” the pro-Russian party Shor following a wave of anti-government protests, taking a decision that means the party will be outlawed immediately.

The Shor party, led by exiled businessman Ilan Shor, has been staging protests for months in the small country bordering Ukraine. Shor, who lives in Israel, has been accused by the West and Chisinau of trying to destabilize Moldova and has been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union.

According to the court’s decision, the party should be disbanded from the moment the decision was announced. The Ministry of Justice of Moldova will set up a special commission that will take charge of all the legal procedures to abolish the party.

The party’s MPs will retain their seats in the Parliament of Moldova as independents, without the right to join other parliamentary groups.

Shore did not immediately comment on the Constitutional Court’s ruling but the party’s vice president, Marina Tauber, condemned the court’s actions earlier today.

“We will come to power with our team. For us this embarrassing process is an experience” he said. “Citizens should have the right of free choice. Our team will fight for everything that is good for Moldova”

Sor has denied that the protests are part of efforts to destabilize Moldova or part of a Russian threat, and has accused the country’s president, Maya Sandu, of driving Moldova toward bankruptcy.
