A massive sea and air search and rescue operation is underway in the Atlantic Ocean to locate the missing tourist submarine Titan, owned by OceanGate Expeditions
The boat went missing on Sunday, 600 kilometers off Newfoundland in Canada, shortly after diving with five passengers who wanted to see the wreck of the Titanic up close.
According to the BBC, the five people on the mission are
– THE Hamish Harding 58-year-old billionaire from the United Kingdom and chairman of the aircraft company Action Aviation
– The 73-year-old French explorer, Paul Henri Narzolet
– The CEO and founder of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush.
– THE Shahzada Dawood from Pakistan – a trustee of the SETI Institute, a non-profit organization based in California – and his son Suleman.
They all paid $250,000 each to live the admittedly shocking experience.
According to CBS reporter David Pogue, who dived on the Titanic wreck last year in a submarine, passengers enter the submarine and then it is sealed from the outside with several bolts.
If the submarine gets trapped or leaks, you can’t get out, and there is no backup means of rescue.
According to ocean researcher Robert Blasiak, if the submarine has fallen to the bottom of the ocean the conditions will be difficult as the atmospheric pressure will be about 380 times more than on the surface.
Also, according to information, the vessel had sufficient oxygen for 96 hours.
But “if the passengers panic and start to be very active in the cabin, the oxygen will run out much faster,” Frank Owen, former director of the Australian Search and Rescue team, told the BBC.
