“In the last opinion polls, the ND gathers around 40% and thus has a clear lead over SYRIZA, which is just under 20%”, publishes the German Press Network (RND)
A few days before the second election, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy they seem to be headed for another comfortable victory. “In the last opinion polls, the ND gathers around 40% and thus has a clear lead over SYRIZA, which is just under 20%”, it publishes German Journalism Network (RND). If the predictions are confirmed, “Mitsotakis can count on around 160 of the 300 seats, receiving a clear mandate for a second term.
Mitsotakis personally also scores well in opinion polls: 40% of respondents want him as the next prime minister. Only 15% want a return of Alexis Tsipras. Especially in economic and financial policy, 34% of respondents trust the plan of the conservatives, while the corresponding figure for the radical left is 14%».
Excluding the economic achievements of the Mitsotakis government, such as the rate of growth and the reduction of public debt, the German network also emphasizes that “in Mitsotakis’ first term, extraordinary conditions prevailed: first, tens of thousands of immigrants besieged the Greek-Turkish border for weeks, and then the pandemic plunged the country back into recession. Once these were overcome, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, exploding energy prices and inflation brought new challenges, while in the summer of 2022, tensions with Turkey escalated.
Now, Mitsotakis is asking for a clear mandate from the electorate, aiming to implement important reforms, such as restoring the state health system, faster administration of justice and reforming the education system. In addition, there are many issues in public enterprises, as the Tempe train crash showed».
Finally, the RND comments that “next Sunday also concerns the political future of Alexis Tsipras, whose party lost more than 1/3 of its voters compared to 2019. […] If SYRIZA does not significantly improve its vote share, or if it falls further, as some polls suggest, the party’s leadership is likely to be in question».
