The chance of an AfD candidate becoming chancellor of Germany is very low, given that the party should be able to form a government
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party said on Wednesday it plans to field a chancellor candidate for the first time in the 2025 election as it soars in the polls, a day after the country’s spy agency warned voters against supporting party.
According to political analysts, the AfD, founded a decade ago, has risen to second place in the polls due to voters’ concerns about the recession, immigration and the transition to a carbon-neutral economy.
The far-right party is also benefiting from voter distrust of Chancellor Olaf Solz’s three-party coalition, which in recent months has appeared to be struggling with public disagreements between partners over how to deal with these crises.
The AfD has a record 19-20%, behind the opposition conservatives at 27-28%, but ahead of or equal to Solz’s Social Democrats.
The chance of an AfD candidate becoming chancellor of Germany is very low, given that the party should be able to form a government and currently all other parties have ruled out working with it.
