As long as there are restrictions imposed on women in Afghanistan, it is “almost impossible” for the Taliban government to be recognized by members of the international community, the UN envoy to that country estimated today.

“In my discussions with the de facto authorities, I am very clear on the issue of the obstacles they have created with the decrees and restrictions they apply, especially against women and girls,” Roza Otunbayeva, head of the of the UN Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

“The Taliban are asking to be recognized by the UN and its members but, at the same time, they are acting against the basic values of the UN Charter,” he underlined.

So “we told them that as long as these decrees are in place, it is almost impossible for their government to be recognized by members of the international community,” he added.

These measures against women, who are also “very unpopular with the Afghan people”, are “costing them both national and international legitimacy, while causing suffering to half the population and damage to the economy”, the UN official said.

The Taliban government is not recognized by any country or international organization
