The USS Ronald Reagan’s visit is only the third for a US aircraft carrier since the end of the Vietnam War
The US nuclear aircraft carrier “Ronald Reagan” will stop at Danang port in central Vietnam on Sunday. This is a rare visit by an American warship at a time of increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing in the South China Sea, as reported by Reuters.
The aircraft carrier will arrive Sunday afternoon and stay in Da Nang until June 30, local media reported as saying a spokesman for Vietnam’s foreign ministry.
The USS Ronald Reagan’s visit is only the third for a US aircraft carrier since the end of the Vietnam War.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt stopped in Vietnam in 2020 to mark the 25th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
This year Washington has sought to upgrade its official ties with Vietnam amid Hanoi’s frequent disputes with Beijing over borders in the South China Sea. China claims almost all of the waters, including the exclusive economic zones of Vietnam and other countries in the region.
US carriers often cross the energy-rich sea, which is a critical route for global trade. Warships often move under the surveillance of Chinese vessels.
On Wednesday, the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong and a group of escort ships sailed south through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, Taiwan’s defense ministry said.
