Europe is facing a serious deterioration of its security space, with the return of war to our continent and the intensification of threats to our democratic societies, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Policy states in an article published in the French newspaper La Tribune. of Security and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell and the Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton.

Underlining that, increasingly, the future of Europe’s critical infrastructure depends on what happens in cyberspace and space, they stress that Europe must be able to protect its interests, which is supported by the first European Space Security Strategy and Defense, which they presented last month.

The EU will also redouble its efforts to promote responsible behavior in space and prevent any arms race through multilateral standards and rules, with diplomacy remaining the EU’s first line of defence, the two European officials noted, citing as an example support for the ban on the test of destructive anti-satellite missiles, recently proposed by the United States and to which some EU Member States have already joined, in line with the 2022 UN General Assembly resolution on this issue.

Faced with the growth and intensification of threats, the EU is adapting its space approach, fully integrating our security and defense challenges, they note, stressing that this is all part of building the geopolitical Europe that its citizens expect.
