Vanilla Sky… An emotional video captured the first time where “Vanilla”a 29-year-old female chimpanzee, saw the open sky for the first time after arriving at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida.
“Vanilla” was initially wary of venturing out into the outside world, but the pack’s alpha male, named Dwight, encouraged her. In her first moments in the light, she remains open-mouthed, with her reactions being completely human.
The 29-year-old female chimpanzee was released from the New York Laboratory for Primate-on-Primate Experimental Medicine and Surgery (LEMSIP). Vanilla had never been outside of a 5-square-foot cage or a garage-sized structure until she was brought to the animal shelter.
Vanilla lived in the infamous lab – which closed in 1997 – until she was 2 years old. It was then among a group that was moved to California, where it was confined to a larger space in a shelter that ceased operations in 2019 and was threatened by wildfires.
Last year, the chimpanzee sanctuary arranged to transport Vanilla and her team to Florida on 150 acres.
