A New York man is accused of shooting his three-week-old daughter to death with an arrow while trying to hit his wife.

26-year-old Patrick Proefriedt allegedly had an argument with his wife, who he shot with a crossbow. But there she was holding their daughter when the arrow fatally struck her, Broome County Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The incident happened at the couple’s home in Colesville, New York around 5:10 am. local time last Monday, authorities said. The arrow hit the little girl in the upper torso and exited near the armpit before hitting the mother in the chest. “This is one of the most heartbreaking and senseless crimes committed in this community,” said Sheriff Fred Axar.

Officials say Proefriedt then removed the arrow from the child, tried to stop his wife from calling the police and then fled in a red pickup truck before officers arrived on the scene.

The officers located the crossbow and tried unsuccessfully to rescue the little girl. Little Eleanor Carey was pronounced dead at the scene. Her injured mother was taken to a hospital for treatment, but officials did not say how serious her injuries were. Authorities, using a drone, located the perpetrator in the woods about a mile from the home after his truck got stuck in the mud.

Proefriedt was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and first-degree criminal contempt, authorities said. He had a history of domestic violence with his wife. Proefriedt is being held at the Broome County Sheriff’s Detention Center.
