In the last 48 hours they reached the Lampedusa 2,033 immigrants and refugees, with 46 different vessels.

The boats carrying the “desperate of the sea” had started from Sfax, Tunisia, and Zoura, Libya. Migrants and refugees were assisted by the Italian Coast Guard and the country’s Economic Police in Italy’s search and rescue area and off Lampedusa.

Most of the survivors come from Eritrea, Ghana, Chad, Sudan and Egypt. Two castaways rescued near Lampedusa told first aiders that the boat they were on had capsized in Tunisian territorial waters and they had boarded another migrant boat in the area, but some did not. they succeeded and there are missing persons.

All in all, they are currently in the temporary immigration center of Lampedusa 3,279 people, while normally its capacity should not exceed 400. The Italian authorities aim to decongest it, by transferring the arrivals to centers located in Sicily and other areas of Lower Italy.
