Eleven diplomats and 29 members of the technical and administrative staff of the Russian embassy, accompanied by their families, “will depart Romania on a civilian plane belonging to a Russian airline,” the Romanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Media reported images of an Ilyushin Il-96 plane landing at Bucharest airport, from where it is due to take off in the late afternoon, according to airport sources cited by local press.
This decision “reflects the current level of bilateral relations”, which have been drastically reduced by Romania “after Moscow’s declaration of aggressive war against Ukraine,” the ministry explained.
The authorities had made their request on June 8 and had given 30 days to Russia to execute it.
After the invasion of UkraineNATO member Romania expelled numerous Russian diplomats suspected of espionage, as did other European countries.
The total staff of the Russian embassy was thus reduced by more than half, according to Bucharest.
