“The challenge is to avoid, at all costs, the left remaining in the governance of Europe, after all the scandals and damages,” said the Italian Minister of Infrastructure, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of the League
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the Italian Minister of Infrastructure, Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of the League Matteo Salvini referred to the next European elections and the parties he believes should support the composition of the new European Commission, which will be elected in 2024. The eurosceptic Italian politician effectively formalized a “change of course” and officially declared that he wants to be included in the forces that will compose and support the European institutions.
In more detail, Matteo Salvini emphasized:
“I want the participation of the entire center-right, united, but without the socialists. The challenge is this: to avoid, at all costs, the left remaining in the governance of Europe, after all the scandals and damage. I am sure that all the parties in our governing majority, starting with the Brothers of Italy and Forza Italia, share this goal.”
Referring to the same issue, the vice-president of the Italian government added:
“I am ready to propose a written agreement, before the vote: no compromise with the left. The emergency period is over and we will be clear with the voters avoiding, in our faction, any tension or suspicion. We will do everything possible to defeat the left at the polls and avoid the losers coming back through the back door, thanks to power games and betrayals, as happened in Italy with the second government of Giuseppe Conte. I want to add that we have excellent relations with some European commissioners, while the Italian Paolo Gentiloni is often overly critical and does not show enough of a cooperative spirit.”
It is recalled that, according to many analysts, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also intends, with the Adelphia party of Italy, to support the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen to the presidency of the European Commission.
