THE Saudi Arabia called the Swedish ambassador to complain about it burning of the Koran by a protester outside a mosque in Stockholm, an action that sparked strong diplomatic reactions in the Muslim world, Saudi state media reported today.
Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s two holiest sites: Mecca and Medina, condemned the incident on Wednesday, shortly after Salwan Mominka, a 37-year-old Iraqi living in Sweden, burned pages of the Koran.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the Swedish ambassador yesterday, Sunday, to ask Stockholm “to stop all actions that go against international efforts to spread the values ​​of tolerance, moderation and rejection of extremism and undermine the necessary mutual respect in relations between peoples and the states”, the country’s official agency SPA reported.
Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco have also summoned Sweden’s ambassadors to protest.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, based in Saudi Arabia, yesterday called for collective action to prevent acts of desecration of the Koran.
