The first disappearances in Mexico date back to the 1960s and 1980s. But their number increased dramatically after the militarization of the so-called “war on drugs” in 2006.
Dozens of human remains were found in secret graves in the Mexican state of Jalisco (west) by a collective set up by mothers of the disappeared, following an anonymous phone call to a member of the collective yesterday morning.
As Indira Navarro, coordinator of the organization, told AFP Madres Buscadoras [«μητέρες ερευνήτριες»]the secret tombs are located in a suburb of the capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, and extend over an area of about ten acres,

“I received an anonymous phone call in which they gave me the coordinates of a location and told me that over 50 bodies had been buried there,” he continued. Arriving at the scene, “we immediately found clues”, Ms Navarro added.

“So far, about twenty have been found [σ.σ. πτώματα]”, explained.
The state of Jalisco has the highest number of disappearances in all of Mexico, about 15,000 since 1962, out of a total of 111,203 across the country, according to official data.
Security experts say the numbers are largely explained by wars between cartels, including Jalisco’s New Generation gang, for control of the drug market.
But not all victims were involved in crimes, many had nothing to do with the underworld.

In the absence of results in official investigations, families of disappeared people conduct their own — and, not infrequently, find secret mass graves.
In this suburb, Tlachomulco de Zuniga, a short distance from Guadalajara, such tombs had already been found.
On June 14, a group of mothers of missing persons announced that 27 bags of human remains had been found.
While at the end of May, the bodies of eight call center workers were found in the state of Jalisco, a few days after they disappeared. The victims, two women and six men, about thirty years old, had also been dismembered their remains were found in nearly fifty plastic bags dumped in a ravine in Sapopananother suburb of Guadalajara.
According to the federal government, the initial evidence of the investigation indicated that the particular telephone service company was involved in cases of real estate fraud and extortion by telephone.
The first disappearances in Mexico date back to the 1960s and 1980s. But their number increased dramatically after the militarization of the so-called “war on drugs” in 2006. Since then, the country has had more than 350,000 murders, the majority officially attributed to account settlements.
