According to the FT, citing Western and Chinese officials, Xi addressed the warning to Putin during their 4-to-4 meeting in March
The Kremlin reacted strongly to the Financial Times report that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally warned Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke of a “fabrication”.
According to the FT, citing Western and Chinese officials, Xi addressed this warning to Putin during the tete-a-tete meeting they had during the Chinese president’s official visit to Moscow in March.
Asked if he confirmed the report, Peskov replied: “No, I can’t confirm that.” He added that the two countries issued statements outlining the content of the Putin-Xi talks. “All the rest is a fabrication.”
The FT report included statements from Kremlin officials who claimed that Putin had independently decided not to use tactical nuclear weapons, because that would not give Russia an advantage.
The same sources told the newspaper that a nuclear strike would turn areas Putin claims for Russia into an “irradiated wasteland” without helping advance Russian forces.
