At least 25 people were killed and 17 others injured when the bus they were traveling in veered off the road and plunged into a cliff in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

According to Mexican media reports, the driver lost control of the vehicle – possibly due to brake failure, according to police sources – and on a bend in a mountain road the bus crashed on a 20 meter cliff.

The bus had left Mexico City for Yosundua, in the western part of Oaxaca.

Volunteers rushed to help the rescuers who were trying for hours to extricate the passengers from the battered sheets of the fatal bus.

The governor of Oaxaca state, Salomon Jara, expressed his deep sorrow for the fatal accident and his condolences to the families of the victims.

About three hours before the bus crash in Oaxaca, eight people were injured in a multi-vehicle pileup in the state of Queretaro (center). A tanker was engulfed in flames and the fire spread to other vehicles
