Boris Johnson’s Toris MP resigns – Joins Labor

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

His departure from the ruling Conservative Party and his joining the opposition Labor Party was announced by MP Christian Wakeford.

In a letter to Boris Johnson, he justified the resignation by saying that Conservative policies did not serve the interests of the people of his suburb of South Berry and that the Prime Minister and the government were “incapable of offering leadership”. The letter also accuses Boris Johnson of “shameful” behavior in connection with the Downing Street party scandal amid a lockdown.

The MP’s decision was made a few minutes before the meeting with questions to the Prime Minister in the House of Commons.

Mr Wakeford’s district is part of the so-called “Red Wall”, a former Labor stronghold in central and northern England that was won in 2019 by Boris Johnson.

At least 20 Conservative MPs from those constituencies met on Tuesday to discuss their grievances with Mr Johnson in the wake of the ‘partygate’. At least 11 of them are said to have submitted a letter of no confidence to the competent party body today.

With 54 letters, a vote is automatically taken to oust the party leader.
