At least 11 people died from collapse of an apartment building in Paulistanear Recife in northeastern Brazil, and three people remain missing, authorities said today in an update.

Rescue crews were digging through the wreckage in search of a woman and two children, who are missing in the disaster that occurred yesterday. Eleven people were also injured, aged 5 to 45, according to the Civil Protection of Pernambuco state.

A 65-year-old woman and two teenage girls were pulled out alive.

The three-storey building was adjacent to a large residential complex, according to images published by local media.

The apartments there were sealed in 2010 due to the risk of the building collapsing but were illegally occupied, Civil Protection added.

In April, another building in the same condition collapsed in Olinda, still in the state of Pernambuco, killing 6 people.
