Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, Hana Maliar, has made the clearest admission yet by a Ukrainian official that Ukrainian forces were responsible for last October’s attack on the Kerch bridge linking Russia with occupied Crimea, she says. CNN.
According to CNN, Maliar cited 12 Ukrainian achievements since the start of Russia’s invasion 500 days ago, and among other things she wrote on Telegram: “273 days ago, we launched the first strike on the Crimean bridge to disrupt Russian logistics »
The Telegram message also mentioned the sinking of the cruiser Moskva 451 days ago and the liberation of Snake Island 373 days ago.
The attack on the Kerch bridge, which severed the main transport links between mainland Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula, not only hurt Russia’s military effort in Ukraine, but also dealt a psychological blow to Moscow and a major propaganda victory for Kiev.
Ukrainian officials celebrated the explosion at the time, but did not clearly claim responsibility.
It came on the day Vladimir Putin turned 70, and Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov posted a video of the burning bridge along with a video of Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.”
Among other responses, the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine posted on Facebook, “Air Defense of the Russian Federation, are you sleeping?” along with a video showing a section of the bridge road that was completely destroyed.
CNN has reached out to the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a statement about claiming responsibility for the bridge explosion, but has yet to hear back.
