After long negotiations that divided the partners of the three-party government coalition under Chancellor Olaf Solz
The German government is expected to announce its new strategy towards China later in the day, after lengthy negotiations that divided the partners of the three-party government coalition led by the chancellor Olaf Solz.
The head of Germany’s diplomacy, the Annalena Burbock (Greens), will present the government’s plans from 12:15 (local time; 13:15 Greek time) at the Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies in Berlin.
Government spokesman Stephen Hembestright is also expected to comment on the new strategy during the regular briefing of accredited editors.
There will be no major presentation, as in the case of Germany’s national security strategy in mid-June.
The national security strategy was presented last month by Mr Solz personally and four ministers in his government. In this text, China is characterized – at the same time – as a partner, competitor and adversary, a position aligned with that of the EU.
Although the national security strategy said there had been “increasing elements of rivalry and competition in recent years”, it did not make clear what stance Berlin would take towards Beijing going forward, which is expected today.
Mrs. Burbok, on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius yesterday Wednesday, said that the strategy for China will send the message that “we want to live in peace and freedom with all our partners in this world, with all the countries of world, but at the same time we are not naive”.
