German Health Minister: “Omicron” wave peaks and hundreds of thousands of cases by the end of February

by

Hundreds of thousands of cases a day are expected by Health Minister Carl Lauterbach in the near future and at least until mid-February, and he warns of a serious burden on the health system, as the percentage of unvaccinated adults is considered high. “No reason to be optimistic or to end the alarm,” he says characteristically.

Speaking on German public television channel ZDF 2, Lauterbach described as “irrelevant photo of the moment” the fact that despite the large number of cases in Germany, the number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 remained low and explained that the current wave in Britain and France continues to reach Germany, which will experience the peak of the wave of the “Omicron” variant from mid to late February. “The real weight in the Intensive Care Units is still one month away. I hope the situation is good even then. “This will be the endurance test, not what we see now,” said the Minister of Health and Professor of Epidemiology.

Yesterday in Germany there was a record number of cases, with 112,000 cases, while today the cases exceeded 133,000.

Referring to the planned mandatory vaccination, Mr. Lauterbach stressed that “we can not get out of the chaos without the need for vaccination” and say next autumn that we are ready to get back to normal life, but defended the ruling coalition’s choice not to present a relevant bill, but to allow the deputies to submit their own proposals and finally to vote conscientiously. As an MP, he stressed, he is in favor of the general mandatory vaccination of adults, but as a federal Minister of Health, he believes that it should not be placed.
