More than ten prison guards at a penitentiary in Reggio Emilia, a city in northern Italy, face charges of torturing and beating a prisoner of Tunisian origin in early April, Italian justice announced Thursday.

The prison guards have been suspended after being charged with torture, beating and causing bodily harm to a prisoner, and making false statements to cover up the facts, the local prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The investigation, which is being carried out against 14 suspects, began after a complaint was filed by a prisoner of Tunisian origin. The events unfolded on April 3rd.

The prisoner was forced to lie on the ground, his head covered with a pillowcase, before being “kicked and punched in the face and body,” prosecutor Gaetano Calogero Paci told media.

While being held in solitary confinement, the inmate broke a sink and used a piece of it to cut himself, requiring medical attention, according to Italian media.

Footage captured by CCTV cameras led to the identification of the suspects, according to reports.
