The Mexican journalist was the victim of a murderous attack Nelson Matus Pena in Acapulco. Gunmen approached the journalist’s car in a store parking lot and executed the director of the news site in cold blood “Lo Real de Guerrero”as reported by El Universal newspaper.

The mob attack took place shortly after 3pm on Saturday (local time, midnight Saturday to Sunday in Greece) in the Emiliano Zapata district, north of Acapulco.

Nelson Matus Peña had survived two assassination attempts, the first in 2017 and the second in 2019, according to Mexican media reports.

A week ago, Luis Martín Sánchez Iñez, a journalist for the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, was found dead in the state of Nayarit, a few days after he disappeared.

Journalistic investigations in Mexico of cases of corruption, criminal organizations or drug cartels are dangerous for those who dare. Since 2000, more than 150 journalists have been murdered in the country, according to figures from the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
