The governor of Belgorod region claimed today that Ukrainian forces fired Grad missiles at the Russian town of Sebekino, near the border with Ukraine, killing a woman who was riding a bicycle.
There is no immediate comment from Kiev, which almost never claims responsibility for attacks inside Russian territory. Reuters was unable to verify the facts.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod, said rockets hit the market area, damaging a building and two cars. “To our great sorrow, one person has been killed. A woman riding a bicycle on the sidewalk at the time of the bombing,” Gladkov wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
According to the same source, two other settlements were also bombed, with no casualties reported. However, three houses in Gorkowski were damaged, as well as warehouses, a fence, a water tank and the power line to an agri-food company in Ilek-Penkofka.
The town of Sebekino, just 5km from the Ukrainian border, has been targeted several times, with Russia claiming it is being shelled by Ukrainian armed forces. Kiev, for its part, accuses Russian forces of indiscriminately bombing populated areas. Both sides deny targeting civilians.
In May and June, fighting took place in the Belgorod region when members of a pro-Ukrainian armed group composed of Russians crossed the border and clashed with Russian security forces.
