The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) sounds the alarm over the escalation of violence in Ituri
The United Nations expresses deep concern for the bloodshed of recent days in Ituri Province, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 40 civilians were killed last week in armed attacks.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is sounding the alarm over the escalation of violence in Ituri. “Last week, at least 40 civilians were killed in a three-day period by gunmen’s attacks near the town of Bunia,” he says, adding that in Ituri province “more than 600 civilians have been killed and 345,000 residents displaced” since the beginning of the year.
“We strongly condemn the violence and appeal to the parties involved to respect international humanitarian law and human rights,” the relevant statement underlines.
For his part, Stéphane Dujarric, the representative of the UN secretary-general, appealed to the international community to show its solidarity with the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and provide support to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in this African country.
