Pyongyang said today that the deployment of US weapons such as aircraft carriers, bombers or nuclear submarines in South Korea may qualify for North Korea to use nuclear weapons, the North’s KCNA news agency reported, citing a statement by the country’s Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam.

The minister’s remarks bring heightened concern as each side steps up military displays of force in a standoff over North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

North Korea’s defense minister also accused the US and South Korea of escalating tensions in the region, criticizing the first meeting of the Washington-Seoul nuclear advisory group.

“The ever-increasing visibility of the development of the strategic nuclear submarine and other strategic assets may fall within the conditions of the use of nuclear weapons specified in the DPRK (People’s Republic of Korea) law,” the statement said.

The remarks concern the US Ohio-class nuclear submarine that arrived at a port in the southern city of Busan earlier this week.

“The phase of a military conflict on the Korean peninsula has emerged as a dangerous reality,” KCNA said in the cable.

The news comes amid a period of heightened tension between the two Koreas and the US, as a US soldier crossed the border into North Korea on Tuesday. Pyongyang has yet to publicly comment on the incident with the American soldier.
