The armed forces of Russia launched a new air strike on Odessa (southern Ukraine), a port of strategic importance, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, as a result of which at least one civilian was killed and another 18 people were injured, among them four children, the governor of Odessa, Oleh Kiper, informed via Telegram.

“Unfortunately, we have a civilian dead due to the monsters night terror attack [σ.σ. της Ρωσίας] in Odessa”, said the official.

The raid was launched “at 03:00” [σ.σ. τοπική ώρα και ώρα Ελλάδας], according to him. He spoke of 18 injured, of which “fourteen were taken to city hospitals”. Including “three children,” he clarified.

Initially, he had spoken of material damage “to political infrastructure, apartment buildings and a religious building”. According to the Ukrainian news agency RBC-Ukraine, an Orthodox cathedral that had begun to function in 1809 in the city was hit and severely damaged.

“More anti-aircraft defense systems” and tactical missiles were claimed by Ukraine’s western allies, the head of the services of the Ukrainian presidency, Andriy Germak.

According to the Ukrainian air force, Onyx precision missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles were fired after midnight.

Odessa, which was added to the list of endangered world cultural heritage in January, has suffered repeated Russian airstrikes.

The city experienced a “night of hell” on Thursday, with Kiev accusing Moscow of targeting port infrastructure and grain terminals to prevent the possible revival of a deal allowing Ukrainian food exports, which Russia decided to end last Monday.

On Friday, UNESCO “strongly condemned” the previous Russian airstrikes, which caused “damage to museums” in Odessa.
