Trisay for the repose of the souls of the fallen of the Cypriot struggle and the victims of the Turkish invasion of the island of martyrdom and prayers for the just resolution of the Cypriot conflict and the reunification of Cyprus, are celebrated today in all the churches and monasteries of the Archdiocese of America, according to the order of Archbishop Elpidophoros.

In his circular for the Day of Remembrance for the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the Archbishop notes that 49 whole years have already passed since that sad summer of 1974, when on July 20, armored Turkish soldiers invaded our Cyprus with the tolerance of the great powers and because of the weakness of Greece due to the military dictatorship.

As he underlines, the memories of the persecutions and the uprooting from the ancestral homes are alive and many of the Cypriots, of Kyrenia, Famagusta, but also of the other blood-soaked regions, recount with sorrow their uprooting, the rapes, the looting and the destructions, and of course they express the just demand of the rendering of justice and the liberation of their homeland, so that the Great island to be reunited under the flag of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union.

“We cry and we hurt”, continues the Archbishop, “when we remember the gross injustice and the invasion, when we mentally worship the monasteries of Saint George and the Apostle Andrew in Karpasia, Saint Barnabas in Salamina and Saint Spyridon in Tremetousia, when vivid memories of dances and festivals from weddings and songs in the long-suffering villages of the occupied territories are awakened from the peaceful coexistence of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots”.

“I am sure that the pressure exerted by the Greek and Cypriot governments, the Philhellenic senators and parliamentarians in the USA, Greek Cypriot organizations everywhere and all of us Orthodox Christians can, despite the fact that the Turkish government seems unyielding to the appeals and resolutions of the UN, bring what is desired, that is, a strong, united and free Cyprus,” he underlines.
