Germany is in close contact with the authorities and government in Greece over the fires in Rhodes – German police and firefighters are already assisting the Greek authorities
Berlin is on an open line with Athens for the devastating fires in Rhodes, as there are many German tourists on the island of the Knights.
A crisis management team meeting is underway at federal ministry of foreign affairs in Berlin, on the subject of the fires in order to decide whether further measures are needed for German citizens.
“Unfortunately, the situation has not improved,” State Department spokeswoman Andrea Zasse said earlier Monday, noting that the crisis management team will allow the federal government to “coordinate with our colleagues on the ground and decide for possible further measures”.
The head of the legal and consular department of the German embassy in Athens has been in Rhodes since yesterday, who, in collaboration with the honorary consul on the island, are trying to facilitate the repatriation of their compatriots. According to Ms. Zasse, the situation is being closely monitored, travel advisories are constantly being revised, and the federal government is in close contact with authorities and the government in Greece.
The spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior, Maximilian Kahl, pointed out for his part that German police officers and firefighters are already assisting the Greek authorities, mainly in the transport of victims inland.
