The head of the Pereira police department, Alexandra Dias, said the chimpanzee had earlier attacked a zookeeper.
Two chimpanzees were shot dead by police hours after they escaped from a zoo in Pereira, in the central west Colombia.
The two animals escaped on Sunday night from the zoo Ukumari. After three hours of searching, police found Pancho – a male chimpanzee in his late 20s – 2.5 kilometers from the zoo.
The head of the Pereira police department, Alexandra Dias, said the chimpanzee had earlier attacked a zookeeper, explaining that due to its aggressive behavior no attempt was made to drug it and the officers were ordered to open fire.
The second chimpanzeea female named Cheetah, was also killed not far from the zoo, Dias said without elaborating.
In a message posted on social media, the management of the zoo expressed its sadness at the death of the two chimpanzees who had “stole the hearts of all visitors” for years.
