THE Belarus submitted a request in May to join the BRICS group of five leading emerging economies, as reported today by the Reuters agency citing the Russian RIA Novosti.
“This decision was a completely logical step in the framework of expanding cooperation with traditional partners and friendly states,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said.
Brazil, India, China and South Africa (founding members of BRICS along with Russia) have refused to follow the West in imposing economic sanctions against Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Belarus, a close ally of Russia, is also subject to Western sanctions. President Lukashenko allowed Russian troops to use his country’s territory as a base for the invasion of Ukraine.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Minsk25 states have already applied to join BRICS, which is considering whether to set criteria for new members to join or possibly create a parallel forum with BRICS partners.
“The importance and influence of the BRICS in the world will steadily grow,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus emphasizes.

The BRICS group accounts for 23% of the world’s GDP and 42% of the world’s population.
