Armenia: President Armen Sarkisian resigns

by

Armenian President Armen Sargsyan resigned on Sunday, saying he believed the country’s constitution did not give him enough power to influence developments in his country, which is going through a serious crisis.

President since 2018, Armen Sargsyan clashed last year with Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian over a number of issues, including the ousting of the Armed Forces leader following Armenia’s 2020 defeat in the Azerbaijan-Azerbaijan war over Azerbaijan. .

“I thought about it for a long time, I decided to resign from the post of President of the Republic, after I worked actively for almost four years,” Sarkisian said in a statement posted on the website of the Armenian presidency.

“The question arises why the president failed to influence the political developments that led us to the current national crisis. The reason is again obvious – lack of appropriate tools – the Constitution. “The root of some of our potential problems is hidden in the Fundamental Law.”

In December 2015, Armenia was transformed into a parliamentary democracy, following a referendum, while presidential powers were curtailed. Executive power is essentially in the hands of the prime minister.

Armenia agreed to a ceasefire with Azerbaijan last November after Russia called on the two countries to end their deadliest armed conflict since the six-week conflict in 2020, when Moscow also mediated a ceasefire.

Since then, Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian has come under pressure with regular demonstrations to resign under the terms of the peace deal. Under the Moscow-sponsored 2020 agreement, Azerbaijan regained control of Nagorno-Karabakh, which it had lost during the 1990s war.

Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia has remained dependent on Russia for aid and investment. Many Armenians accuse the government of corruption and mismanagement of an economy that has not recovered since the collapse of the USSR.
