The death toll from wildfires in Hawaii, one of which turned the Lahaina resort on the island of Maui into avalanches, rose to 53 on Thursday night, Maui County authorities said.
At least three large wildfires broke out simultaneously in Maui on Tuesday night, cutting off the western part of the island and the historic town of Lahaina, where at least 271 buildings were destroyed or damaged.
There are dozens of people who suffered burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries. The search and rescue operation remains ongoing and thousands of people have hurriedly left the island, either going to shelters or fleeing it.
