The Jordanian military announced today that it shot down a drone flying over Jordanian territory carrying crystal methamphetamine (crystal meth) coming from neighboring Syria, Petra news agency reported.

Syria has turned into a drug-trafficking hub and Jordan is on the transit route to Gulf countries of the Syrian-made amphetamine derivative known as captagon, according to Western anti-narcotics agencies and Washington.

The Jordanian military has shot down drones from Syria carrying drugs or weapons in the past, but has not specifically mentioned crystal meth.

Military and security officials from Jordan and Syria have met to discuss ways to tackle the problem of drug trafficking from Syria. Despite Damascus’s claims, Jordan says it has seen no efforts by Syrian authorities to combat the drug trade.

Syrian authorities have not commented on the incident. Last week, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad denied Syria’s role in drug production and trafficking and said fighting the drug trade was in the interest of both Syria and other Arab countries.
