A car bomb attack and ambush blamed on dissidents from the former FARC rebel group killed four police officers over the weekend in southwestern Colombia, police said.
The director general of the police, General William Salamanca, reported yesterday via X (the former Twitter) on Sunday that Carmelo Jose Garcia, a police officer, was killed in a “terrorist attack with a car bomb in the village of Timba, in the province of Cauca”.
The day before, three other police officers were killed in an ambush in the Morales community, about thirty kilometers from Timba, the general added.
The area is considered a stronghold of the Central General Staff (GSC), the largest dissident group that rejected the deal that disarmed, disbanded and reincarnated the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) into a political party in 2017.
Under the leadership of Ivan Mordisco, the KGE is among the rebel organizations that Colombian President Gustavo Petro wants to negotiate with, in the hope that it will agree to disarm and disband, as part of his policy to bring about “full Irene”.
The opposition complains that armed groups – left-wing rebels, far-right paramilitaries, organized crime – are taking advantage of this policy to strengthen themselves and attack the security forces.
