North Korean leader Kim Jong Un toured major munitions factories again and ordered an increase in production of missiles and other weapons, state media reported on Monday, as the militaries of South Korea and the US announced they would begin major exercises next week to improve their joint capability against the North’s nuclear threats, according to an Associated Press report.

Kim’s order to produce more weapons also comes as US officials believe that the Russian Defense Minister called during his recent trip to North Korea to sell more weapons to Russia for the war with Ukraine.

The Korean Central News Agency said Kim visited missile factories, mobile launch platforms, armored vehicles and artillery shells on Friday and Saturday. He visited a number of other munitions factories in early August.

During a visit to the rocket factory, Kim Jong Un has set a goal to “drastically increase” production capacity so the plant can mass-produce missiles to meet the needs of frontline military units, KCNA said.
