The Italian soprano Renata Scotto has passed away at the age of 89, the mayor of Savona, birthplace of the famous treble, announced today. “A unique performer, a great musician and artist, a great woman has passed away. Cultivated, refined, generous…a simple person,” wrote Marco Russo in a Facebook post.

Born on February 24, 1934 in Savona, northwestern Italy, she studied classical singing in Milan and began her career playing the role of Violetta in Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata.
During her multi-year career, she has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London and La Scala in Milan, among others.
“I am devastated by the death of Renata Scotto, one of the greatest opera singers of all time,” wrote tenor Placido Domingo in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
