The death toll from the August 14 explosion in San Cristóbal, in the southern part of the Dominican Republic, less than thirty kilometers from the capital Santo Domingo, has risen to 32 dead, authorities announced Saturday.
The national forensic institute has confirmed “32 deaths”, of which “13 bodies have been identified and 11 have been handed over to their families”.
For its part, the Ministry of Health reported that of the 59 injured, 12 continue to be hospitalized, including five in a burn unit.
Julián Garcia, the deputy director of the emergency operations center, said last Friday that searches were continuing at the disaster site. “Until all the debris is removed, the search will not stop” to find missing people, he said.
The powerful explosion hit a commercial area of San Cristóbal, the capital of the province of the same name, on Monday at around 15:10 [σ.σ. τοπική ώρα· περί τις 22:10 ώρα Ελλάδας]. The cause of the disaster, which was followed by a widespread fire, remains unknown and authorities say only that they are investigating.
San Cristóbal, with about 700,000 residents, is the fourth most populous province of the Dominican Republic, which shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
