At least ten people died and more than a dozen others were seriously injured in a road accident in Peru on Saturday when a bus plunged into a cliff in the Andes, authorities said.

The accident happened in the morning when a bus carrying about fifty passengers from the Andean city of Vilcazhuaman to the capital Lima overturned and fell down a 200-meter cliff in the Huancavelica region, in the southeastern part of the country.

“At least ten people died when a bus veered off the road and plunged into a cliff,” state news agency Andina summarized.

Police and firefighters rushed to retrieve the victims, among whom are children.

“Firemen and police are conducting a rescue operation,” Waitara health center head Alvino Rojas told state television.

The most seriously injured were taken to the town of Pisco.

Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru, mainly due to the development of excessive speed by drivers and the poor condition of many roads.
